Ramen is the New Rice (box) for Hong Kong and Yoshinoya’s ramen tsunami is coming.
By HK Lawyer AJ Halkes Barrister-at-Law
Yoshinoya, the beef & rice giant of the F&B world, is projecting their ramen business to fly up from 4% to 13% of total sales in just the next few years. We’re talking billions here! To make this leap, they’ve reportedly gobbled up two Kyoto-based noodle shop operators, so a global ramen revolution is happening.
Here in Hong Kong, the ramen wave is more like a tsunami already.
Stroll down Wyndham Street in Central, and you’ll spot outlets every few steps, four or five spots dishing out steaming bowls in just one stretch! From traditional to modern, ramen is everywhere, I now see it challenging the age-old rice box as the new go-to comfort food for Hong Kong.
But is the move by Yoshinoya exportable, or is the ramen craze here a fleeting trend? One thing’s clear: Hong Kong’s F&B sector is seeing a rapid evolution, and navigating its complexities requires a sharp strategy. Right product, right time has never been more true as the old basics like congee fade away; doors open for the new.
With my over 30 years in liquor licensing and F&B law, I’ve seen so many trends come and go, but this ramen tsunami feels like a real game-changer to me.
