HERE THAI MARKET opening on Wellington Street shows no shortage of people to take up spaces provided the deal is right!

HERE THAI MARKET opening on Wellington Street shows no shortage of people to take up spaces provided the deal is right. The big advantage is probably a cheaper make-over of the failed Brass Spoon (Vietnamese Pho offering) so the equipment is there.

The South China Morning Post recently featured Skechers, the US shoe brand, as taking on a major space in Causeway Bay; they must see a big presence in the HKSAR as viable. With rentals well below their peak and the global retail market still dealing with some form of a post-pandemic impact what is happening in Hong Kong is not so different from elsewhere.

What I am seeing is operators now stepping in and launching fresh concepts, especially in locations where others, perhaps battered by past challenges or poor strategies have exited. These new entrants bring energy, ideas, and resilience, but with ramen and Thai offerings all over Hong Kong real innovation in product less obvious.

Central Hong Kong, SoHo, Wyndham Street and even Causeway Bay are all seeing turnover activity. When viable pricing aligns with ambition the strong operator and the opportunist break cover; that’s very much the “can do” mentality Hong Kong has shown in the past and what it needs more of right now.
