I’ve got a soft spot for Hong Kong’s lucky number plates and the upcoming May 25th auction has a LOT!

If you’ve dreamed of giving your car (or future car!) a touch of personality, the Hong Kong government’s special number plate auction on May 25 is full of options. These numbers are an easy way to make your ride feel uniquely you. I saw “AJ 85” on offer (attractive but I have a few with my initials already so I’m not bidding) or a fun one like “F1SHCAR” to make people smile. That’s in the personalised plates list or 120 plates at 2:25 pm you can bid on as someone wants it; perhaps they made their fortune in fish?
A distinctive plate is a great accessory; it adds character to what are now increasingly bland cars and makes any vehicle stand out, no matter its age; it also decouples the car from first registration date. Even if you’re CARLESS right now (yes that plate is on the auction list too) the government gives you 12 months to find the perfect car to match.
Remember most traditional plates (starts at 9:25 am) are non-transferable, so it’s a commitment to your style, a “personal signifier” perhaps. Or, if you’re feeling creative, you can apply for a personalized plate (you decide what) through the Transport Department. I’m not here to push extravagance, I know times are hard, but perhaps a lucky number or something fun as the ideal low budget pick-me-up; one you see every time you walk up to your car; and there’s even an on-line May 22-26 auction as well!

The little things can make journeys more fun and a fair few of you have probably seen the plate TAXI on Hong Kong Island (yes it is on a taxi!); even share a few shots of fun HK plates in the comments if you like … it always makes me smile what people here come up with!
