Pub with no beer? Depressed by Gen Z coffee discos and non-drinking? If zero alcohol is the new normal embrace it!
By HK Lawyer AJ Halkes Barrister-at-Law
Zero alcohol drinks need no liquor licence, so why not start from zero and work your way up?
Every major beer brand has a low- or zero-alcohol beer below the legal definition of “liquor” in Hong Kong, which can be served without red tape or liquor licenses, with no risk.
If your liquor licence is delayed or you are waiting on food licensing approvals, this fix may keep your venue open and your Gen Z customers satisfied. Not just a workaround, this is a very strategic business solution start point. As a business idea “the pub with no beer” might do just fine; it’s not beer as we traditionally understand it, it’s beer as re-defined with no alcohol for the new generations!
Delay in obtaining liquor licences is less common today but issues with underlying food licences can also cause major hold-ups or suspensions of your liquor licence.
Here is a quick list of some of the zero and low alcohol options readily available right now in Hong Kong. If your food or liquor licence is held up, these might keep the fussiest and thirstiest Gen Z guest happy .. Just watch out for the percentage (on low alcohol) you don’t want the law to trip you up – stay with “zero alcohol” beer!
Suntory All-Free
Asahi Dry Zero
Young Master Zero
Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0%
Erdinger Alkoholfrei
