Who says all F&B is struggling in Hong Kong?

By HK Lawyer AJ Halkes Barrister-at-Law

The challenge is not that the market is dead. The challenge is having the right product, the right location, the right people, the right PR, and yes, the right timing.

I keep seeing new launches popping up everywhere. Look at JUS at No. 60 Staunton Street, Central (in the photo). Many new entrants (and the clever established ones) are doing well from SoHo to small villages and shopping malls in the New Territories. Will they have longevity?

The Bakehouse example proves that for the right product, success can be fast, can be sustained and can be built upon. How long that lasts is something no one can predict, but if they innovate, they will last; if not, they will go the way of old chains or shops that didn’t have heritage appeal or offer anything special.

One thing is certain. If you refresh a concept, if you create something new, iconic or interesting, if you deliver a strong proposition and bring fun to the table in F&B, Hong Kong is buzzing, so you might have a long line at your door.

And if you have a line at your door, people will be attracted by the line … and will join it.
