Hong Kong is full of car treasures!
By HK Lawyer AJ Halkes Barrister-at-Law
Can you guess what this is before the end of the video reveal? Should I try to buy it?
Hong Kong is full of car treasures, and while expanding my gravel bike training, I stumbled upon this project. The question is: is it a step too far?
I have always been into motorcycles, as most who know me will attest. Over the years, I have also had a slew of cars: from a V8 Rover 3500 to an MGB, to a Porsche 944, to a Mercedes 300TE, and many more (even a couple of Lanchesters for the geeks who know what those are). But I have never attempted a rescue like this one. It is quirky, neglected and possibly too far gone.
The challenge is not only whether I can acquire this beast (step one) and whether it is worth saving at all (step two), but registration in Hong Kong could be tricky (step three), with the de-registration process already underway. At first glance it does not look completely beyond repair; on second thoughts, maybe it does?
Still, there is something really compelling about it. Posting here feels like a fun break from my usual focus on F&B and Hong Kong local area dives. Old cars like this one are scattered across the city and the countryside; I’ve come across everything from pink and gold Rolls Royces to clusters of abandoned Lotus race cars. All there waiting for someone with the interest and courage to try and rescue them.
Would you even try to rescue something like this? And would you want to see more of these discoveries? I could share one now and then if of interest.
