Asian Club Managers Conference Hong Kong 2025
By HK Lawyer AJ Halkes Barrister-at-Law
I was privileged to speak at the Asian Club Managers Conference on Tuesday. In Hong Kong, a supportive association or club can be invaluable, whether professional, industry-focused focused or interest-based.
Private members’ clubs and Hong Kong associations face the ongoing challenge of attracting new members, generating fresh revenue streams, and meeting the needs of both their memberships and stakeholders. In some cases, they also answer to the HKSAR Government. These are unique challenges that unfold every day for Club Managers. It is never easy to measure the value you provide as a guest speaker, and the diverse audience of this conference, ranging from small clubs to large organisations, made the experience thought-provoking.
What stood out to me is the increasing number of enquiries I am receiving from people now looking to establish new clubs in Hong Kong. These are not limited to sports. They include clubs for nationals of countries that are currently investing heavily in Hong Kong, as well as commercial initiatives such as wellness clubs. The appetite for new forms of club, community and networking is growing.
At the same time, the landscape is evolving quickly. Member expectations are rising, technology is reshaping services, and the demand for higher standards of engagement is clear. Overlay this with increasing regulatory oversight, statutory requirements, and public interest, plus the recent failures of a few “clubs”. The result is a complex matrix that requires careful navigation, thoughtful planning, and precise execution, even before the first steps toward establishment are taken.
The experience also left me reflecting on my own outreach. While I share my knowledge with clients who ask for it, after COVID, I fell out of the habit of addressing broader audiences. Perhaps it is time to re-engage in a more personal way by delivering content directly to groups like this one.
