Early bird gets the bun at the Sing Fat bakery in Kam Tin

EARLY BIRD GETS THE BUN at the Sing Fat Bakery in Kam Tin, but the place comes with a simple warning: get there early, or you will miss all the good stuff.

Before Kam Tin even had a main road, around 70 years ago, Sing Fat Bakery existed, and it remains here today.

I am not going to say this is Eric Kayser, because it is not. In many ways, it is better, as this is exactly what traditional Hong Kong bakeries are all about. Pineapple bun-style bread, hot dog rolls, classic local pastries, everything is authentic, familiar, and made on the premises, by hand, with care.

There are still a few bakeries like this in the city, but most of the traditional ones have been absorbed by large chains, rebranded, or rebuilt. They may sell versions of old products, but they have lost the personal touch and the taste.

I wrote about this place in an earlier post without naming it or explaining where it was. If you are ever in the New Territories, it is absolutely worth the trip.

But to repeat the warning, see the photo, the shelves are empty because they sell out quickly, so you need to get up early.
