What is an amazing .com domain name worth? The good news is that, perhaps, if you own a good one, it could be up to US$70 million. Now, ai.com has set a new bar, meaning x.com, which Elon Musk bought, looks like a bargain.
Elon Musk reacquired X.com from PayPal in 2017 for an undisclosed sum, estimated at over US$10M, obviously with a plan for it, after his 2000 ousting. Now ai.com seems to have “sold” for US$70M in 2025 to Crypto.com’s Kris Marszalek from Arsyan Ismail, who had previously acquired it for a reported around US$10M. It even briefly redirected to Musk’s xAI in 2023, among other AI companies.
Decades ago, I gave lectures on domain names stressing their value; little did I or anyone then think of the tens of millions of US$! But these .com digital assets have gone from a few US dollars to register to US$70 million via a crypto transaction. A clever, relevant and/or meaningful .com domain name is, right now, probably the hottest investment product and most freely tradable asset on the planet a person could own.
The world should be watching this sector more closely over the coming years. We already have fractional ownerships, domain leasing, and new valuation models. As LLMs such as Qwen from Alibaba, DeepSeek, and others expand from China into global markets. This means memorable and reliable naming will matter even more. A valuable .com domain anchors everything about a business. It is the front door, the shopfront, the place where all sales, branding, and products begin.
The good news is this. There may still be some excellent names left. It is worth checking whether your business name, brand, personal name or idea is still available. You can do a quick search via many routes, like the one below, and then there is the massive second-hand trading market, which is suddenly very active.
