I used to live here, in the same building that now houses the International Organization for Mediation in Hong Kong.
Many years ago, when I was serving in the Royal Hong Kong Police Force, we regularly attended training courses in the city. My second intermediate language course was held in town, but my actual posting was up in the New Territories near the border.
Rather than commuting every day, I put in a request to find somewhere to stay in the city. To my surprise, I ended up being given a huge room with high ceilings inside this building, on the back, near the gate. At the time, it was a fully operational police station, running 24 hours a day. It certainly was not the quietest place to live, but many of us spent years living inside police stations as part of the job; no big deal.
Now the building has been completely renovated and repurposed by a modern, forward-looking Hong Kong administration. It is genuinely good to see our historic buildings preserved and brought back into meaningful use, rather than being left empty for years or being handed over to a stream of selfie-shooting visitors.
What makes it even more interesting is that I am now also qualified and registered as a mediator myself. Funny how life comes full circle. Who knows, perhaps one day I will be back there again, this time working inside it rather than living in it.
