Hong Kong is coming back as a concert stop as Kraftwerk just showed

Hong Kong is coming back as a concert stop as Kraftwerk just showed, the size and scale of impact music has, can’t be underestimated.

Chatting with a fan who flew in from Beijing, who wasn’t even born in the 70s, it hit me how the totally pioneering sound and themes of Kraftwerk have aged amazingly well, and sound great today. And how Hong Kong is becoming a part of the tour circuit again.

Up front, the main member, Ralph Hutter, now 79, started making music in the late 1960s, yet he was so far ahead of his time.

In Hong Kong, the audience demographics saw majority weren’t even born when the major hits were. Yet the spirit is 100% relevant today; the music with its dance and electronic core carries well. In the context of exploring or cautionary topics in the 70s and 80s via emerging themes of man-machine synthesis, our relationship with computers, high-speed transport, and being or becoming robots is perhaps all too familiar, as Elon Musk is making robots and robot cars in the AI era.

Autobahn (1974) holds up as does The Model and other themes like Computer Love .. from around 1980.

Ralph Hutter, the last original member, must look at what they wrote and what they were thinking in the 70s and 80s with a wry smile. Now living in a world where people are forming personal relationships with “computers” and man-machine hybrids are just around the corner.
