HK heritage postbox, lurking in the shadows painted brilliant red

Lucky postbox number eight is a “non-functional” part of Hong Kong‘s cultural heritage; are we now featuring things like this quite enough?

Strolling round Sai Ying Poon the other night, I bumped into this heritage postbox, lurking in the shadows, painted brilliant red, as opposed to the functional green repainted ones. This postbox may even be one of the first 14 metal ones from 1892!

If so, the stories that have passed through it are unimaginable, but this old sentinel now just sits in the shadows, a little lonely and somewhat unexplained. But equally, it’s right there to touch and experience, so that’s very positive!

It’s great the way the government have not sought to obviate all our heritage aspects, but this one deserves at least a “spotlight” to my mind.

So much of our intangible heritage, from food brands, hawker stalls and street vendors has been and is now still being lost to development; iconic locations for people to resort to are also still being lost, from culturally significant shops to lost brands.

I’m all for innovation and development, but incorporating heritage and historical context into the new to inform future generations of where we came from and how we arrived at where we are is critical. Will Henderson https://lnkd.in/gEDvWd5h have aspects of heritage in the next generation of the Hong Kong waterfront, or will it be all chrome and marble? Modern mega brands and glitz over what made Hong Kong, at times, seem to suck the life out of our older areas and pull trade away from our historic businesses, just accelerating their decline.

In the meantime, I’m going to search for some of the other old letter boxes. I know there’s one at the post office in Kam Tin, still in use daily.
